This is the bread van that comes up to the village every other day. Cars are becoming less of a rare sight, but for Transylvanian village locals, horse and caruta (pronounced caruzza) is the usual form of transport.
My name's Arabella, and I have a stake in Transylvania – in a small village 4,000ft up in the Carpathian Mountains, 8km from Zarnesti, about 45 mins drive from Brasov, and two hours from Sibiu (European Capital of Culture 2007). Bran Castle is in the valley below my house, and there's a bat cave in the next village. Based in Liverpool (UK) for 20 years, I moved out to Transylvania for good in July 2010.
